Plenty of artists are using paper in creative ways. Whether it’s rebuilding scenes from Star Wars or sculpting gorgeous Brazilian mountains, it’s obvious paper’s good for than just your standard sketch. Not sold just yet? Check out the paper-crafted works of Cecilia Levy and you’ll become a believer.
The Swedish creator is known for sculpting cups, bowls, decorations and more out of paper. She uses vintage books, magazines and even comic books as the base for her pieces, tearing out pages and carefully pasting them together to create beautiful new forms.
Levy has a background in both graphic design and bookbinding, which makes the whole “ripping books apart” aspect of her work more than a little ironic. In 2009, Levy began experimenting with three-dimensional art, describing her early pieces as, “wobbly, but expressive.” While her work might not have been perfect, Levy continued her paper-crafting and since 2013 has worked full time as a paper artist, participating in exhibitions and selling her superbly crafted wares.
The artist even teaches workshops on bookbinding and paper art, helping eager artists expand their horizons and gain new skills.
