Straight outta Cooperstown there’s a crazy baseball player named Ice Cube. Well, maybe not in real life, but the line checks out once you see these ingenious rap-based baseball cards.
These homemade cards come from artists Cori Johnson and Zac Milner from their Straight Outta Cooperstown project. The series mashes-up hip-hop’s most legendary artists with baseball greats from the past to create a playful array of cards full of throwback style. Johnson and Milner’s skilled photo manipulation combines two of America’s favorite pastimes together in a series that can be enjoyed by more than just hip-hop heads.
These artists do more than just throw rappers’ heads on baseball players’ bodies. They’ve gone the extra step by mashing up the names of their subjects to create completely new characters. For example, a Method Man and Mickey Mantle combo becomes Method Mantle. And if that wasn’t enough, each new creation comes with a baseball-related rap from the musician. Missy Elliot wasn’t exactly talking about sports when she rapped, “Now I’m in the 9th inning/Thought I fell off, ain’t quite finished,” but the line takes on a different meaning when she’s slapped onto a baseball card.
