5 facts about Australian immigration
The latest 'Australian Social Trends' report, published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, contains some interesting facts and figures on immigration Down Under.
The following are just 5 facts about Australian immigration that can be found therein!
1) There are currently 5.3 million immigrants living in Australia. That equates just over a quarter (26 per cent) of the entire population!
2) Australia has one of the largest immigrant populations in the Western world. According to the 2011 census, our country is home to more people born overseas than New Zealand, Canada, the US, and the UK. New Zealand is only a few points behind with 23 per cent, while the US and the UK only boast immigrant populations of 13 per cent.
3) Our largest contributor of immigrants is the UK - a whopping 1.1 million people from this neck of the woods are currently living in Australia.
4) The median length of residence for immigrants in Australia is 20 years, which means once people move here on general skilled visas they are more than likely to stay for the long haul!
5) A total of 85 per cent of immigrants are living in urban areas. This compares with 64 per cent of those who were born in Australia.
