Magha Purnima 2021 significance

Magha Purnima is a holy day as religious texts narrate about the glory of the holy bath and austerity observed during Magha month. Every single day in the Magha month is good for making charity, according to religious beliefs.

Magha Purnima is popularly known as Maghi Purnima; it is the commencing and most significant day of Magha month. On this day, devotees perform rituals like taking a holy bath, offering alms, donating cow and Homa at Prayag, the conjunction point of the river Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati, on Maghi Purnima.

During Magha month, people also wake up early and take bath in the Ganga or in the Yamuna river. The daily bath starts from Paush Purnima and commences on Magha Purnima. It is believed that all charity done by devotes during this time gets fructified. It also marks the last day of Kalpawas, which is the month-long austerity camp on the bank of the river Ganga at Prayag.
