Why Getting a Job Can Be Difficult if You’re Disabled
A job can be a source of great fulfillment in every person’s life, but finding a job is often a problem for many Americans. There are many programs available and resources to help you, and even if you have a disability, there are opportunities out there to help you make career changes in your life.
For one thing, the Ticket to Work program allows people who struggle to find and maintain employment to get employed and stay employed. Here are some of the things that may be making it harder for you to find a job as a person with a disability.
Exorbitant Healthcare Costs
The point of the Ticket to Work program is to help people who are receiving Social Security disability income get into the work force. However, fewer than 20% of Americans who have disability are currently working. One of the reasons is that the cost of health insurance is more than they would make at any job.
People with disabilities also often have extremely high medical costs due to their disability. One of the goals of the Disability Act is to eliminate some of the red tape associated with getting people with disabilities in control of their healthcare costs and helping employers see the value in making adjustments to healthcare group plans to make it more available to all.
Limited Mobility
Another thing that’s making it difficult for people with disabilities to get jobs has to do with having limited mobility. While not all people with disabilities have physical disabilities that prevent them from commuting to work, there’s a significant number of people with this problem. This issue is compounded by the fact that bad weather often prevents people from making it into work.
If you’re an employer, there’s a whole lot of people out there who would love to work for you. Perhaps a good solution to this would be to fill the vacancies in your organization with people who have disabilities who are looking for opportunities to work remotely or telecommute.
